Movie Review: Just The Way You Are (The Bet - Movie Adaptation)

"Walang talo 'pag sumugal ka sa pag-ibig. When you love, you always win. Kahit masaktan ka pa, love will always leave you with a stronger heart."

“Walang talo pag sumugal ka sa pag-ibig. When you love, you always win. Kahit masaktan ka pa, love will always leave you with a stronger heart.” – Arthur Taylor (Ricky Davao) to Sophia Taylor (Liza Soberano)

This is my short movie review of the 1st big screen lead appearances of Enrique “Quen” Gil (as Drake Sison) and Liza Soberano (as Sophia Taylor) in Star Cinema’s “Just The Way You Are” (JTWYA). JTWYA is directed by Theodore Boborol and happens to be the movie adaptation of Wattpad’s best-selling novel entitled “The Bet” written by Kimberly Joy Villanueva.

Pros:

  • Undeniable effortless charm/chemistry of LizQuen.
  • SOLID acting performances of the two leads, especially, Liza’s. For a newbie like her in the showbiz industry, indeed, she’s a REVELATION!
  • Yves Flores’ effective comedic timing in his character as Drake’s best friend, Andrei! All his acts are spontaneously hilarious that draw laughs in the movie theater!

Cons:

  • Generic and predictable story (maybe due to the removal of many relevant references to the novel.) Many stories have tackled the betting-game-love-plot and this movie fails to have a unique touch on the theme.
  • Distracting inconsistency of Quen’s hair from one sequence to another throughout the film.

The movie was released on June 17 and already earned more than P100 million in less than 2 weeks.
